New Zealand Fashion Week

2018

Project Overview

As part of my materials class during high school, I was tasked with designing and developing a garment. During this class I was given freedom to create a design based on my own research.

As minimalism and simple, “clean” fashion was on the rise at the time of my design, I chose to investigate a period of fashion where excitement was visible throughout fashion. The bright colours and patterns as well as the flamboyant forms seen in traditional South American garments immediately became my focus. Using this as a grounds for my design, I created a matching set inspired by South American fashion with a focus on modernity.

My design was chosen to be shown in the New Zealand Fashion Week, Youth Designers show “Walk the Line” 2018.

The Design

For this concept I drew inspiration from talavera fabrics and Mexican embroidery. I chose a sheer embroidered fabric and layered it over a satin underskirt. I hand crafted the pattern as I wanted the skirt to show body and flow as the model walked.

The top consists of a double layered frill and a lace up back. The intent behind the lace up back was to ensure maximum wear over time - as one's body changes, the top changes as well.

To complete the outfit I created a Mexican inspired floral headpiece. I used faux flowers that resembled the flowers on the skirt.
