Liquid Melancholy

Victoria University of Wellington - 2020

Project Overview

During my university studies, as part of my “Experimental Mediums Course”, I was tasked with creating a lighting piece that emulated an emotion. The purpose of this course was to educate oneself surrounding the material qualities of different mediums and how to manipulate and utilize these qualities to create something beautiful.

As the requirement was to use only 2  materials to construct the lighting piece, I chose to use thread and recycled carbon fiber sails from yachts. By manipulating the bias of the sail I was able to transform a relatively stiff material into an organic shape. I developed geometries that meshed together to create the shell-like shape. With these geometries I hand stitched each piece to the other to create the final form.
